In one single day, my time was thoroughly wasted ...for over 6 hours!
Waste of Time#1 Pointless morning class for 3 hours: I got up early and rushed myself to class, only to be bored out of my mind while we super slowly learned about muscle testing.
Waste of Time #2 Standing in line at the DMV, with no service, for 1 hour: I trekked very far from home on the Subway in order to renew my Driver's License. After waiting 1 hour, the receptionist to me there was a problem with the server and that they couldn't renew my license that day, meaning I'd have to travel all this way another day to have it renewed.
Waste of Time #3 Super slow and boring yoga class, for 1 hour: I packed up my yoga supplies and headed to the studio, paid the class fee, and then proceeded to complete the slowest yoga class I have ever done. I was bored in the class things were moving so slowly. It was a different teacher than normal and unfortunately I didn't think the class was worth my money.
During this one day, I was sure getting fed-up with all of these "wastes of time". But luckily, despite my negative state, I was able to reflect and decided that maybe this was the type of day that I needed. Maybe I needed a slow day, a day full of opportunities to reflect, slow down, and be left in my own thoughts...?
Furthermore, everyday at school I learn about disease, death, and disorder. I am constantly reminded that every living and healthy day is a beautiful thing. As such, I am learning that even wasted moments should be celebrated and appreciated.
Hope your day is full of precious moments, even those that feel wasted!
Geez lady! Have a better rest of your day! Snuggle Tony! That'll make everything better! )
ReplyDeleteThanks! ...but all that actually occurred last week. I am since recovered :P
ReplyDeleteWe talk about spending time, wasting time, and investing time, but I disagree that it should be so commodified. I see time as something we experience, but do not own, and cannot even manipulate. I feel bad that your day appeared to be so fruitless, but worse that you considered it a waste. You are a very busy woman, always with several things on the go. Maybe running into a few stoplights was an important part of your week's path. As a society we are conditioned rush from one thing to the next. I think you were right when you wrote that a more slow-paced day can be a refreshing change, even when we do not expect it.
ReplyDeleteDEAR BECCA YOUR MESSAGE ON YOUR BLOG WAS SO UPLIFTING. GRAMMIE HATES TO WASTE TIME . GUESS SHE SHOULD BE SO GRATEFUL FOR HAVING TIME TO WASTE. DONT YOU THINK....LOVE YOU..GRAM..XOXO
ReplyDeleteBlue Prince - I completely agree; that was the purpose of this post :) Somewhat peaking of not "owning" time, have you seen the TED talk on not owning ourselves? That we are not an object, but are a cluster of experiences? Very intriguing. http://www.ted.com/talks/julian_baggini_is_there_a_real_you.html
ReplyDeleteGram - Thank you for your kind words! Love you too. xo.
