The TCM Tongue.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we learned all about tongue diagnosis. (Yessssss. I couldn't wait to learn about tongue diagnosis!). Tongue diagnosis involves an analysis of the tongue first thing in the morning in natural lighting. The tongue shape, color, texture, coating, and underside, are all examined. It is believed that the tongue is an outer reflection of the internal happenings of the body. The tongue is also divided into organ systems (see my drawing above). For instance, the tip of the tongue reflects the functioning of the heart, the end reflects the lung, the body reflects the stomach and spleen, the edges reflect the liver and gallbladder, and the root of the tongue reflects (mainly) the kidney.

Expect more tongue-talk as the course continues.

  1. Do tongue piercings dammage any part of this?

  2. Good question, but I don't think it should affect the diagnosing (unless it was infected).
