Yes I Did!

Oh, yes. Oh, yes I did... I made homemade chocolate! And guess what? It was easy-peasy and delicious. This chocolate is raw, takes 2 minutes to make, and tastes a heck of a lot like those fancy Lindt chocolates.

Raw Chocolate From Scratch

1/4 cup coconut oil*
1/2 cup cocoa powder
2 tablespoons raw honey

Optional adds: peppermint oil, pure vanilla extract, use maple syrup instead of honey

Mix all ingredients into a smooth paste. Spread onto a wax or parchment-lined plate. Place the plate in the fridge, let the chocolate firm up for a least an hour, and then slice into bars or squares. Store the resulting chocolate in the fridge. Makes 10 mini chocolate bars or 20 bite-sized squares. Wrap in foil for a fancy-looking homemade treat.

*This is a must in this recipe, coconut oil is special because it solidifies in the fridge.

  1. Nice! That's awesome! Does it stay solidified after you take it out of the fridge? Or does it melt right away?

  2. Does it taste like coconut though?

  3. It just gets soft within 10-15 minutes at room temperature, so it's best to store it in the fridge.

No, it doesn't taste predominately like coconut, but has a faint coconut essence. Coconut oil is a derivative of the coconut plant. It is kind of like olive oil doesn't taste the same as eating a whole olive, coconut oil doesn't make you feel like you're eating a handful of shredded coconut.

  4. This is great! I want to try it! Do you know if it's possible to buy fair trade cocoa powder though? I'm trying to commit to only fair trade chocolate since it's so easily available. Homemade, fair-trade chocolate would be practically utopic though!

  6. P.S. I prefer my chocolate to be fairly bitter, so you may need to up the honey/sweetener of choice to your preference. If this makes things to runny, then add a bit more cocoa powder.

Really, this recipe is all about your preferences. Taste testing is required!
